Obituary
Sy lived life to the fullest in every way imaginable. A successful entrepreneur in the chemical manufacturing industry, he was never afraid to try his hand at other opportunities that intrigued him. From citrus groves to thoroughbred racing and breeding, he threw himself into a wide variety of ventures with passion and enthusiasm.
An avid fisherman, he searched far and wide for the best fishing spots on the planet. Whether it was bonefishing on Christmas Island in the South Pacific, fly fishing in Colorado, or day trips with his grandchildren off the coast of Key Biscayne, he felt at home on the water.
Later in life he was a dedicated horticulturist, fighting against all odds to grow exotic fruit trees from the terrace of his 26th floor apartment. He loved nothing more than to lead guided tours of his fruit trees for friends and family, identifying every single specimen.
But his greatest success was a 67 year love affair with his beloved wife, Beverly. The two traveled the world hand in hand, exploring nearly every corner of the globe. From the Amazon to Zimbabwe, their shared love of travel and adventure produced more than a lifetime of memories. And more than a few slideshows.
No one will ever wear a moustache the way he did, make homemade salads with as much care and dedication, or look as relaxed watching a football game in his La-Z-Boy.
In life and in death, he is an inspiration to all who knew him. We will love and miss him forever.
The family is grateful beyond words to his devoted caregiver and companion, Chris Cuyos, who provided loving care to the end. Thank you also to the team of caregivers and the amazing hospice staff.

I met both Sy and Beverly almost 10 years ago when they became patients at my dental office. Their love for each other was evident and Sy courageously kept on going after his heart was broken by her passing. We would have conversations in the office long after his appointment was finished—talking about horses, sports, and of course, what you could grow on a balcony. He bounded in and out of the office like a man 30 years younger, remained interested in a wide-array of topics, and was an inspiration to me on how to enjoy life. As Rosh HaShanah approaches, I’ll miss the honey he’d always remember to send with a note wishing a Sweet New Year. Lastly, I’ll end off the way Sy and I always said farewell to each other: “zei gazunt!”
Sincerely,
Neil Friedman

I had the honor of making acquaintance with Sy and his beloved and beautiful wife Beverly about 35 years ago, and all i can say is that i am so much better as a person for it.
What a great couple they were fun and full of life and what’s most interesting is that they were so “cool”. Sy was one of the “coolest men” that i have ever met. He had such diverse interests, from fishing, sports betting, horse breeding, orange groves, boat building, raising plants of his balcony, and so on. Just amazing meeting and knowing someone with so many things happening and the excitement that he would have each day when he went to work on all those things and how his face would light up when he would tell you about them. He knew how to live and enjoy life. But, nothing would light up his face when he would speak about his family and his grandchildren, as his greatest love was for them and his wife Bev. in having meeting Sy, I became a beneficiary of this great man and father as he became a great friend and support over the years and someone who i could speak to when some wise advise was needed. He will be missed by me dearly and by all that knew his as well. He and Bev had a great expression that my wife Hilda and i use all the time now, which they would use when they went to a restaurant that was not up to par, where Sy would look over to Bev and say, “take a good look Bev”, meaning that they were not coming back, so i will say now, “take a good look Sy” and good bye Old Friend!

I met Sy and Beverly in the mid-70’s through their daughter Bonnie. They were a,ways warm and gracious. I became reacquainted with Sy and Beverly when they joined Beth David Congregation. It was a pleasant surprise to see them sitting in the Falk Sanctuary the first year they joined us for the High Holy Days services. When Beverly passed, Sy became a regular at daily services. He was one of those rare individuals who always had a smile and friendly word for those whom met. One had no trouble recognizing Sy. He was always suntanned, with neatly combed white hair, magnificent mustache, sparkling blue eyes and a ready smile.
He was a mensch in every sense of the word. Mywife, VIcki, joins me in extending our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Bonnie,Marc and Sy’s grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I grew up at Bryn Maur Country Club were Sy and Bev were members along with my parents. The Baskins and my parents were members of the same synagogue and my dad (and sometimes with me) played golf with the lefty golfer Sy. This couple was amazing. They were loving and caring. They were invited and came to Tucson in 1996 when my son was bar mitzvahed. We shared a lot of good times together, including Sy’s insistence that I could grow certain fruit bearing trees on my Tucson property. He was right! May the two of them rest in peace. The world needs more people like Sy and Bev. Marc and Bonnie were lucky to have them as parents. My sympathies to both of them.

I met Sy several years ago when he was my patient at Dr. Friedman’s. Through conversation I found out that he knew my parents and attended the same summer camp as my husband did in Wisconsin. We got together socially a few times and would check in with him by phone to see how he was doing.
Sy was a remarkable man, so proud of his family and their accomplishments.
He lived a full and wonderful life. We will miss him.
My deepest condolences to you all.
